The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) focuses on innovative research in polar and marine environments, encompassing disciplines like biology, oceanography, and geophysics. This role exists within the Climate Dynamics section in Bremerhaven, Germany, to develop an AI-based sea ice model emulator. The team collaborates with leading climate modelers and software engineers to create Digital Twins of the climate system, aiding climate change adaptation.

In this role you can expect to have the responsibilities:

  • Develop an AI-based sea ice model emulator using high-resolution FESOM2 simulations and possibly observational data.
  • Adapt the AI-based sea ice emulator for diverse downstream tasks.
  • Extend the emulator to incorporate advanced sea ice thermodynamics.
  • Publish findings in scientific publications.

This role requires you to have:

  • Master's degree in relevant fields such as computer science, AI, data science, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with *nix systems.
  • Proficient in English (C1).
  • Experience with good software development practices, including version control with git, writing tests, and documentation.
  • Knowledge in data science and AI/ML.

You would benefit from having:

  • PhD in relevant fields.
  • Experience developing AI-based emulators for geophysical models.
  • Experience running geophysical models for sea ice, ocean, atmosphere, or climate.
  • Knowledge of sea ice physics and unstructured grid models.
  • Experience with HPC systems.
  • Familiarity with Python and libraries like PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Keras.
  • Experience with geophysical data formats such as netCDF, GRIB, or HDF.
