The Public Library of Science (PLOS) is committed to advancing open science, promoting changes in research publishing, policy, and practice. This Data Scientist role, operating fully remotely, focuses on improving the management and application of data to boost PLOS's mission. Collaborating with colleagues across different domains, the role aims to structure both published content and internal datasets for optimized data processing and analysis.
In this role you can expect to have the responsibilities:
- Develop machine learning models and employ statistical analysis for content workflow improvement and Open Science support.
- Collect, clean, and analyze large datasets to ensure data quality and integrity.
- Build and test predictive models and algorithms for enhanced scientific content understanding.
- Present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborate with teams to deploy production services improving data utility.
- Translate business requirements into analytical solutions for new open science capabilities.
- Contribute to data strategies development and identify workflow optimization opportunities.
- Engage with new trends in data science and Open Science, applying innovative techniques appropriately.

This role requires you to have:
- Proficiency in Python, R, and SQL for data analysis.
- Extensive experience in statistical modeling, machine learning, and data mining.
- Strong knowledge of NLP techniques and machine learning frameworks.
- Ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly.
- Experience with large datasets and database systems.
You would benefit from having:
- Familiarity with scientific research environments and open science principles.
- Experience with scientific content repositories or publishing platforms.
- Proficiency in Git and continuous integration practices.
This is a short-term contract position with no guaranteed duration, and termination can occur at any time by either party. Applicants must be located in specified US states or the UK.
